Salvador Dali

Salvador Dali (May 1904 – January 1989) was one of art history’s greatest and most versatile geniuses; having originated, developed and perfected multiple new art media, and unique perspectives on the inspiration and perception of fine art. Coupled with his technical skill, precise draftsmanship, and original treatment of previously unexplored subject matter, Dali made an extraordinary impact on the annals of art history. Dali was born in Figueres, Catalonia, Spain, received his formal education in fine arts in Madrid, and in the 1920’s went to Paris and fell under the spell of Picasso, Magritte and Miro. Dali also met Sigmund Freud, and adapted Freud’s psychoanalytic theories into a means of accessing his subconscious in order to enhance his artistic creativity; creating a whole new reality from his dreams. Dali lived in France throughout the Spanish Civil War (1936 to 1939) before leaving for the United States in 1940 where he achieved extraordinary success. He returned to Spain in 1948 where he announced his fervent commitment to his Catholic faith and developed his unique style, based on his interest in classicism, mysticism, and recent scientific developments. Dali’s artistic repertoire included painting, graphic arts, film, sculpture, design and photography, at times in collaboration with other artists. He also wrote fiction, poetry, autobiography, essays and criticism. Major themes in his work include dreams, the subconscious, sexuality, religion, science and his great love for his wife Gala. His life and work were an important influence on other Surrealists, pop art and contemporary artists such as Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons and Damien Hirst. Works by Salvador Dali are exhibited in every major fine arts Museum in the world, including two Museums dedicated exclusively to his work: the Dali Theatre-Museum in Figueres, Spain and the Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida.
